The SWNT Midfield Undercard with the Chance to Shine
Pedro Martinéz Losa will have to find a new configuration for one of the most settled parts of his Scotland side, but as injuries run through the SWNT midfield, opportunity awaits for the undercard.
In less than a month an area of Pedro Martinéz Losa’s squad that many believed to be its greatest strength, the midfield, has suddenly found itself in its greatest state of flux since Scotland’s Spanish Head Coach took charge back in July 2021.
Chronologically the damage has been as follows.
An Injury to Emma Watson (an ACL injury picked up in training ahead of defeat to England last month), then Caroline Weir (another ACL injury picked up during Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Belgium at Hampden five days later) and in the last month Sam Kerr (a knock that has kept the Bayern Munich midfielder out of the German champions squad in recent weeks) a trio of absences that coincide with the unknown status surrounding the fitness of Chelsea midfielder Erin Cuthbert (more specifically her left quad) leaving Scotland’s Spanish head coach requiring a round of midfield mixology that he couldn’t have predicted ahead of Scotland’s Nations League double header against The Netherlands.
So who are the players that Martinéz Losa can call upon should Cuthbert join Watson, Weir and Kerr on the sidelines? Where could they fit and how may their current form dictate the role they play in Nijmegen and then at Hampden a few days later?
