Another week of the SWPL season is in the books one that saw one team emerge clear at the top, another show they can make the leap and another that showed if you build it fans will come.

This was the week that was in the world of Scottish women’s football:

  • Celtic hold the early title advantage but there is a long way to go.

  • Hamilton Accies show that if you build it they will come.

  • The Mighty Mo are getting the hang of life in the top flight.

  • Could Scotland be able to call on a Little bit more than they expect…

What the very best of Scottish women’s football straight to your mailbox then join the hype train below.

Celtic hold the early title advantage but there is a long way to go

Colette Cavangh’s superbly taken late winner against Glasgow City on Thursday night saw Fran Alonso’s side open up a five point gap over their title rivals, making it eight wins out of eight in the league so far this term.

That 100% winning run was extended to nine games courtesy of a 6-0 cruise at home to Motherwell and Fran Alonso’s side have started to emerge as the team to beat in the opening weeks of the season. Heavy victories have seen them rack up 49 goals during that spell it is also their ability to dig in after lurking adversity that will matter when it comes to the crunch later in the season.

After a kind run of opening fixtures allowed them to build momentum Celtic followed with wins over Hibernian, Hearts and City. All had moments.

3-0 to 3-2 in a flash just before half-time against Hibs, a pair of goals that forced Alonso to alter his team-talk and substitutions, eventually completing a 4-2 victory. His side found themselves 2-0 down inside eight minutes at home to Hearts before recovering to secure a 3-2 victory and on Thursday, having gone 1-0 up following Chloe Craig’s penalty and Kenzie Weir’s subsequent red card they would be reined back in by the ten women before Cavanagh’s late winner.

Glasgow City kept pace with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Spartans as did Rangers, who are two points behind the leaders, courtesy of a 6-0 win over Hamilton Accies, with Nicola Docherty’s late strike from range the pick of the goals. In a league where the destination of the title is skewed towards the clashes between the top three sides there is still a long way to go but for now its advantage Celtic.
